Van Slyke and Ots Toch Notes

I began looking at this family in my quest of finding a Native American ancestor. I was excited because I found that my ancestor Willem Peterse (William Pieters) Van Slyke was the son of Cornelise Antonissen Van Slyke and Ots Toch (various spellings). Ots Toch was the daughter of French fur trapper Jacquel Hartel and a Mohawk woman. I kept looking further and found that Willem was the nephew of Cornelise. Bummer. Then I found research that said Willem's wife Baertje Nieffens was the daughter of Cornelise and Ots Toch. ???? Why did she have a different last name? Was she married before she married Willem? Other research don't have Baertje listed as a child of Cornelise.

Below is some of the information I have found.

Van Slyck Family (Unfortunately I can't find this page again to give the URL)
The name Van Slijk means "coming from the village of Slijk". Slijk could be written as Slyk or Slyck.
From Rochon and Spoiala Heraldry Co.: "Blazon of Arms: Van Slyck: Arms: Argent, a bend embattled gules, between a trefoil vert in the sinister chief and three lucies naiant, one and two in bend proper on the dexter base."

Generation No. 1
1. ANTONIS1 VAN SLIJK was born Abt. 1580 in Netherlands, Holland
Children of ANTONIS VAN SLIJK are:
2. i. CORNELIUS ANTONISSEN2 VAN SLYCK, b. 1604, Breuckelen, near Utrect, the Netherlands; d. 1676, Canojaharie, Montgomery Co., New York.
3. ii. PIETER TEUNIS VAN SLYCK, b. 1605, Netherlands, Holland.

Generation No. 2
2. CORNELIUS ANTONISSEN2 VAN SLYCK was born of Breuckelen, near Utrect, the Netherlands1, and died 16761. He married OTS - TOCH HARTELL (Mohawk Indian princess - dusky, Native American beauty with wild savage nature1) Abt. 16201, daughter of JAQUES HARTELL. Cornelis Antonissen Van Slijk from Breuckelen, Netherlands, left in May 1634 from Texel aboard DeEndracht and sailed to the New World. He was a thirty year old carpenter and mason with skills desirable in a new colony. Cornelis had a brother, Pieterse Teunise, who does not appear to have come to America, although his brother's son, Willem Pieterse (or Willem Neef) arrived in 1660 on De Trouw from Amersfoort. Willem's descendants settled in Columbia Co., while Cornelis settled first at Beverwyck, then Schenectady.
Cornelis used various names in official contracts and the name is otherwise often found phonetically spelled. In his contract with Kiliaen Van Rensselaer dated April 2, 1634, he signed his name "Cornelis Antonissen van Slicht. Van Rensselaer often called him "Cornelis van Breukelen". He was also called Cornelis Teunissen, and beginning in 1640> was also called by the name given to him by the Mohawks "Broer (Brother) Cornelis".
Cornelis Van Slyke contracted to Kilean van Rensselaer as a carpenter and mason, but agreed to do farm work when necessary, for the fee of 180 florins a year. In the contract he signed on April 5, 1634, he stated he was 30 years old. Similar contracts were usually of 2 - 6 year duration, the 3 years being most common. The employer would pay passage money and provide bed and board in New Netherland. Farmhands received 100-150 gl. per year, so we can see that Cornelis skills were valued.
August 12, 1634; at Rensselaerswyck working on a farm.
1636; Plantation manager of a farm near Schuyler Flatts where he worked until 1648.
1639-1641; Oneof three men appointed to manage the colony's affairs. He was appointed representative (Voorspraecke), in charge of keeping track of the goods received by the colony.
1643-1648; Spent much of his time at Manhattan as interpreter and negotiator with the natives. (in 1646 the Secretary of Rensselaerswyck, Antony de Hooges wrote urging him to "....come up the river to see how the harvest proceeds" and hinted that he might at least come to the Colony once a year to look after his farm. By this time Van Rensselaer was not happy with Cornelis by this time and complained about his personal accounts and his service as representative, threatening to end their association if matters did not improve.
1644; Had power of attorney from Jan Jansen Schepmoes in a legal case to collect Aeltje Claes' portion of her father's estate.
1646; Given a patent for a large tract of land in the Catskills by Director Kieft as part of his services in bringing about peace with the native tribes. This land became the present day town of Catskill. Cornelis also owned land at Cohoes near the old Mohawk castle near the mouth of the Mohawk River, which had been granted to him by the Mohawks.
7/22/1647; Bought a partnership in the frigate LaGarce with Harman Meyndersen van den Bogaert. The ship was a privateer used to sail the West Indies.
7/25/1647; Appears as a witness with Jacob Kip, on a document called a power of attorney from Nicolaes Coorn to Claes Jansen Calff to collect money and an inheritance from Holland. Witnessed in Fort Amsterdam - name signed as Cornelis Anthonnisen van Schlick.
9/23/1650; Chosen among group of four to renew friendships in the Mohawk country and ensure peace.
1651; Two farms, inventoried along with several others at Rensselaerswyck, were listed as used by Cornelis van Breuckelen and Cornelis Teunesse van Breuckelen. The first farm was 27 morgans (54 acres), with a value of 360 guilders, 7 horses and 11 cows and the comment "a fine farm". The second was 25.5 morgans (51 acres), valued at 600 guilders, with 10 horses and 9 cows. Cornelis was charged rent on this farm until 1661, but did not
always pay, claiming that he owned the farm. When he left Rensselaerswyck in May 1661 he was charged back rent of over 4000 florin that he refused to pay.
11/7/1657; At Beverwyck, stood as surety for Jan Janse Van Otterspoor in his offer to buy land from Johanna De Hulter.
1658; At auction of Bastiaen de Winter's effects at Rensellaerswyck, bought a "parcel of mittens" at a cost of 5 florins.
8/29/1659; Appears on a list of payments for Dirck Dircksee Keyser "one obligation of 33 1/2 beavers".
8/17/1660; Witness in a bond of Isbrant Eldertsen to Adriaen Jansen Croon.
7/18/1661; While at Rensellaerswyck, he and 14 men applied to Governor General Peter Stuyvesant for permission to purchase the Native lands at Schenectady. On of the men applying was his son, Jacques Cornelisse. On
July 27, 1661 a deed was drawn up between the Mohawks and Arent Van Curlar as representative of the settlers. These 15 men later became the first permanent settlers at Schnectady. At that time there was nothing between Canada and the site of Schnectady but forest, game and native tribes. It is believed that Jacques Cornelise Van Slyke, Alexander Lindsey Glen and John Teller were established there as early as 1658. The land was surveyed and patented to the 15 in 1663.
9/2/1661; On a list of obligations and accounts delivered by Jan Bastiaensz to Jeremias van Renselaer at Fort Orange "fl 193-8"
9/14/1661; Deposition of Cornelis Gerritsen Graef, "I, the undersigned, Cornelis de Graeff, declare at the request of Cornelis Theunisz van Breuckelen (Cornelis Van Slyke) that to my certain knowledge it is true that in the spring of the year 1659, the requirer (Van Breuckelen) granted to Andries Herbertsz (at his request) five acres of land to sow the same together with Philip Hendricxsz Brouwer and to enjoy the fruits thereof, for which Andries Herbertsz promised to pay the requirer for his part a half aum of brandy; all of which I am ready to confirm by oath if need be. In witness of the truth this is subscribed by me in Beverwyck
2/14/1662; "Cornelis Theunissz van Breuckele acknowledges that he is well and truly indebted to Carsten Claez, master carpenter, in the quantitiy of ninety good, whole beavers in good friendship loaned by him to his satisfaction received; which said ninety good, whole beavers he, van Breuckele, promises to pay to said Carsten Claesz or his ______ in the month of July next, punctually, without longer delay, therefore binding his person and estate, nothing excepted, subject to all courts and judges. Done in the colony of Rensellaerswyck in New Netherlands, dated as above.. Signed C.T.v.Slicht"
1665; A deposition dated 7/2/1688 of Jean Labate to Albany cours stated; "one Brier Cornelise who had an Indian Squae to his wife" were sent by Governor Nicholls in 1665 to take possesson of the Five-Nations territory for the English, which the Dutch had previously claimed.

She was brought up among Mohawks, received a christian education at Albany and Schenectady1 Devout Christian - helped missionaries among the Native Americans1 Joint owner with sister of the "Great Island" at Niskayuna - gift from Native Americans1 Beauty of a Native American princess1 Occupation: Interpreter at Native American conferences at Fort Orange (Albany)1 In 1678 she appears in the records working on a farm with her husband Claes Willemse van Coppernol in Catskill NY. In 1679 they were living on the Schenectady patent, apparently working the farm of Willem Teller.
One interesting occurrence involving Lea came about in 1683. Albert van Eeckelen, the sixteen year old orphaned nephew of Dirck Albertson Bradt, was tomahawked and seriously injured at Dirck's house while sleeping. A Mohawk named Unochschonie was arrested and charged with the crime. Unochschonie claimed that he was sleeping in Dirck's house that night when another northern native named Wattkeense entered and attacked Albert. However, Albert survived and claimed that he had locked all the doors to the house and that only he and Unochschonie were there at the time of the attack. The courts then infomed the Mohawks of the crime and Unochschonie confessed. He stated he had gone to Dirck Bradt's house to borrow powder so he could hunt ducks for the wife of Claes Willemse (van Coppernol) at Schnectady. Unochschonie admitted that he had intended all along to steal the powder if Dirck would not lend it but added that the devil had encouraged him in this behaviour.
The court then issued a proclamation about the prohibition against allowing natives to lodge in white settler's homes. Unochschonie was put in jail to await the arrival of the Mohawk sachems. Two months later in June 1683 the sachems took Unochschonie into their custody guaranteeing he would not return.
Claes and Lea settled on her land at the Willegen, near Port Jackson, New York.

New Netherland Settlers: Willem Pieterse Van Slyke aka Neef - A genealogy to five generations of the descendants of Willem Pieterse Van Slyke who settled in New Netherland (New York) in 1660
New Netherland Settlers: Willem Pieterse Van Slyke aka Neef - A genealogy to five generations of the descendants of Willem Pieterse Van Slyke who settled in New Netherland (New York) in 1660is my second book on the Van Slyke family. As of February 2005 it is available for sale.
Cornelise's nephew Willem Pieterse Van Slyke and his descendants were briefly discussed in my first book on the Van Slyke family "The Van Slyke Family in America: A Genealogy of Cornelis Anotnissen Van Slyke, 1604-1676 and his Mohawk wife Ots-Toch, including the story of Jacques Hertel, 1603-1651, Father of Ots-Toch and Interpreter to Samuel de Champlain". In the years that followed, I realized it was time to give Willem a book of his own.

Sometimes one event leads to another serendiptious finding. Such was the case with this book. During my four year research period on this book, I was researching other families for a planned series on New Netherland settlers and compiling notes. In-depth research on the Straetsman family led me to an unexpected revelation of a family connection - one which affects Van Slyke and Barheit descendants. You will read about this in the chapter on Pieter Willemse Van Slyke and his wife Johanna Barheit. Other mysteries were solved along the way, and I hope that Van Slyke descendants are pleased with my findings.

The final motivation to complete this book, which has been four years in the making, were the descendants of Willem, who eagerly sought more details about him.

The book is 8 1/2 x 11, paperback, coil bound. Laminated covers are available on request (see order form for cost). Section 1 is a history of the Dutch in New Netherland including chapters on the Origins of New Netherland, Rensselaerswyck Beginnings, Fort Orange & Albany Beginnings, Early Settlers & Immigration, Religon, Money & Money Substitutes in the New World, Patronymics, The Settlement of Kinderhook. Part II is on the origins of the Van Slyke family in the Netherlands (inlcudes new information from commissioned research). Part III is the Immigrant Van Slyke Ancestors in the New World with chapters on Cornelis Antonissen Van Slyke and his nephew Willem Pieterse Van Slyke. Part IV is the second generation with indivdual chapters on each of Willem Pieterse's six children and their spouses. Part V is the Genealogy Report to 5 generations. Included are maps, a bibliography, glossary and timeline. The 200 page book is footnoted and indexed.

Great-Grandfather Lorenzo Dow Heater - 2

L. D. (DOW) HEATER -- L. D. (Dow) HEATER, died at his home on Bens Run, on Thursday of last week. He was in his 80th year. Married in 1875 to Emma J. Cox who died in 1888, leaving six small children, all of whom are living. They are: Frank Heater of Burnsville, Scott Heater of Gilmer, Charlie Heater of Sand Fork, Lee, Flavius and Mrs. Earl Jeffries, all of Clarksburg.
Married again in 1892 to Sarah J. Wymer, who survives with their ten children: Ann(Mrs. Pumphrey) of Orlando, Bird, Mrs. Hefner of Bens Run, Daisy (Mrs. Blake) of Clover Fork, Donie (Mrs. Taylor) of Chapman, Goldie (Mrs.) Arrington of Huntington, Marie Heater, who is at home, James Heater of Huntingon, Coleman, George and Orie Heater at home.
Interment in Pumphrey Cemetery. (Ind. Wed. 30 May 1923)

There is some confusion about him. It appears (see the following note) that his name originally was Salathiel and was changed at some time to Lorenzo Dow. Lorenzo Dow was an intinerate preacher .. nearly every family in Central WV has a son named Lorenzo Dow.

1850 Lewis Co census -- Salathiel, 6 yrs old living with William and Mary; 1860 Braxton Co census -- Salathiel 13 yrs old living with William and Mary; 1870 Braxton Co census - no Salathiel or Lorenzo Dow 1870 Gilmer Co census - no Salathiel or Lorenzo Dow 1870 Lewis Co census - no Salathiel or Lorenzo Dow. In 1875 Lorenzo Dow married Emily Jane Cox in Gilmer Co. In 1892 Lorenzo Dow married Sarah Wimer in Lewis Co, gave parents as William Heater and Polly Heater. His marriage record gives his age as 39 (which would make him born in 1853).
